How the league works
Fun running for everyone, from juniors to veterans, regardless of ability.
The races
West Sussex Fun Run League events take place across the county and are run by local running clubs. Each of the 17 member clubs holds an annual event, open to any runner whether or not their club is in the league. Many are run over the South Downs.
All league races are between 5km and 10km and cost from as little as £5 to enter. Most also have a junior race of no more than a mile, costing about £2. The emphasis is on the fun run in every race: there are spot prizes rather than prizes for the fastest.
Entering
If you run for a member club, your club rep enters you through the league's SmartRs system before the closing date on the race page. Some races also take entries on the day, and some are open to the public; each race page says how to enter and what it costs.
Scoring
Runners from member clubs score points for their club for taking part as well as for their position, so every finisher matters.
- Placing points: runners are scored in percentage bands, 10 points for the top 10% of league runners, 9 for the next 10%, and so on. Each club's best ten scores count, men and women together.
- Participation points: one point for every runner who finishes, up to 25 per club.
- Juniors: participation points for all juniors, up to 15 per club.
- A club's score for each race is placing plus participation points. At the end of the year a club's average score (not counting its own race) may replace the score for the race it put on.
The club with the most points at the end of the year wins the Norman Crook Memorial Trophy. There is also a junior cup and "Most Improved" banners, presented at the AGM.
